The Jock Hutchison Trophy |
The Jock Hutchison Cup for boys was
presented to this school in the year 1926 by Jock Hutchison, who attended
this school when it was a primary. He started his golfing career by being a caddie on the St Andrews Golf Courses. His mother helped by selling his father's fish, to buy his golfing equipment.
From the Abbey Times number 3, 1st May 1964 Jock left the Burgh School in 1910 aged 12 and caddied for some 6 years. In 1922 he went to Chicago to become assistant Pro. at Thunderbird G.C. He won the US PGA Championship in 1925 and came home to St Andrews to win the 'Open' in 1926. He presented this trophy and an identical one to the St Andrews Golf Club. This trophy went missing in 1937 and was only discovered in 1957 to be one of the matching pair on display in the St Andrews Golf Club who reluctantly relinquished it. 2-476 |
