The High Jump statue

The statue in the Rose Garden,
Madras College South Street

The statue located in the entrance foyer of the new Madras College building in 2023

Madras Newsletter Christmas 1984 reported: The school has received a very handsome gift in the form of a sculpture by the well-known artist Scott Sutherland, RSA who died earlier this year. In cold-cast patinated bronze, it is a half-life-sized figure of a girl athlete entitled 'High Jump'. It had been the intention of Mr Sutherland's widow that the school should have a piece of her husband's work in recognition of the education that two of their family, David and Catherine received at Madras College. Tragically, Mrs Sutherland died as a result of a fire in her home before she could carry out her wishes. It is hoped that the figure can be put on display in the South Street building once the alterations are complete.

Postscript:
The statue was placed outside in the Rose Garden at South Street after the alterations had taken place. Unfortunately it was not known that this metal statue used construction methods that made it unsuitable for exposure to weather and this resulted in some deterioration, particularly one of the hands falling off. Thankfully grants were obtained to allow professional restoration and it is now proudly standing in a protective case indoors for all school visitors to see.

Scott Sutherland's most important work was the Commando Memorial at Achnacarry (about a mile from Spean Bridge).

He won an open competition in 1949 to design the memorial and it was unveiled by the Queen Mother on 27 September 1952.
